In a backwater of decaying gentility on the outskirts of a California town live such curious folks as an excellent physician turned by greed into a charlatan, his nymphomaniac wife, an undertaker dreaming of becoming an expensive artist in his profession, a woman too pretty for her own good, a night prowler who steals flowers from neighbours' gardens, and a number of others.
