A woman lay dead in a Hong Kong hotel and now Evelyn knew that the thing that had stalked her across the Pacific would stop at nothing -- not even murder -- and that she could not escape it anymore than she could escape from herself…

Troubled Voyage…

On her wedding day, Evelyn Bevington was left literally standing at the altar when her childhood sweetheart Jerry Davis, ran off with another woman. Though that was three years ago, still “that woman” was the last person Evelyn expected to come calling on her. But luxury-loving Leila Davis needed a favor -- specifically, she needed money and offered to sell an exquisitely carved old ivory chess set. Evelyn bought it, thinking it would make the perfect gift for friends she was planning to visit on Guam. That night she had another caller who came unannounced through the back door and left her unconscious from a blow on the head. It was the first of a series of frightening incidents that Evelyn thought she left behind when she boarded a plan for Hawaii, the first stop on her scheduled trip. But halfway across the world she discovered she was being followed -- and terror became her traveling companion…

***********************************
Three years ago, fair-haired Evelyn Bevington had been left at the altar by Jerry Davis, her childhood sweetheart. Jerry had deserted Evelyn for the sophisticated Leila, and Evelyn never seemed to recover from the rejection.

Then Evelyn received a letter from Carol Webster, Jerry's sister, inviting Evelyn to spend the Christmas holidays in Guam with her and her husband. Evelyn could not imagine anyone wanting to go to Guam for any reason, but Dave Webster was a Navy man stationed there, and Carol's letter certainly did sound enticing. What really decided Evelyn in favor of the trip -- which would take in Honolulu, Tokyo, and Hong Kong -- was the unexpected visit of Leila Davis one afternoon. Leila had brought with her an elaborately carved ivory chess set and offered to sell it to Evelyn for five hundred dollars, saying that she needed the money. Evelyn was enraptured by the beautiful pieces and bought the set then and there, thinking that it would be an ideal gift to bring to Carol and Dave.

Shortly before her departure date, Evelyn met Scott Selby, a dark-haired lawyer who seemed instantly attracted to her. But she was not interested in becoming involved with him or with anyone -- and so it astonished her when he announced that he too was going to Guam -- on business. And when Evelyn learned that Jerry and Leila were also making the trip, she had a presentiment of danger that was only to increase with each passing day.
