When Miles was left some money, he gave up schoolmastering and rented what he thought was a quiet house in the country. It was quiet, except for the three young people who were his neighbors.

Rex and Angela were difficult enough, but it was Jacky, aged twenty, who caused him most trouble. At their first meeting she pushed him in a pond.
