Space Racers by Jason Azarraga

In the distant future, Rhett Alexson, ex-slave and mechanic, has a deep desire to enter his ship in a race around every planet in the Solar System. He joins the competition and suddenly realizes he is the "outsider," immediately being rejected by his fellow racers and their sponsor, super corporation Turbo Technologies. Rhett fights to stay in the competition by using his expertise as a pilot and mechanic. During the ordeal, he faces his darkest fears and learns to cope with the death of his mother. Space Racers is an action filled story about technology, geology, racing, and civil rights. In each character, a person will find someone they know, and those they find will not necessarily be the "good guys."
