Pat had been planning to spend her last summer before beginning her teaching career working in Italy, and she was bitterly disappointed when the arrangements had to be cancelled at the last minute, and she had to take another job, as companion to the motherless daughter of Bruce Barton in the Western Highlands of Scotland.
