Pat had been planning to spend her last summer before beginning her teaching career working in Italy, and she was bitterly disappointed when the arrangements had to be cancelled at the last minute, and she had to take another job, as companion to the motherless daughter of Bruce Barton in the Western Highlands of Scotland. It was a change she was never to regret, however. Other people might find small Samantha difficult, but Pat hit it off with her from the start. However, it was a different story with Samantha's father. Whatever Pat might come to feel about him, it was obvious that he had no serious interest in her - and anyway, his old friend Elspeth had a decidely prior claim....
