After a traveling showman leaves his elephant, Toong Talong, in the Sandersons' barn for the winter, Will is put in charge of taking care of her. Toong is the first elephant ever seen in the United States.
At first Will is frightened by the strange creature, but gradually they become friends -- good friends.
When spring comes and Mr. Sanderson sells Toong, Will is heartbroken, but not for long. He promises he's going to find Toong, no matter what it takes!
